Snoring Appliances

You may or may not be aware that you snore during sleep. If you find that you are feeling tired throughout the day, it may be due to insufficient air and oxygen getting into your body caused by either snoring or sleep apnoea.

It has been estimated that 30-50% of adults snore whilst sleeping. The chance of you snoring increases with age and is more common in men. The process is thought to be due to the lower jaw retruding backwards toward the airway during sleep, constricting the airflow in the breathing tube. A mandibular advancement splint or snoring appliance can be used to hold the lower jaw forward during sleep, to maintain a patent airway. Many patients find this effective in obtaining a good nights rest for themselves and their partner.

People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea where there is complete closure of the respiratory tract and have periods during the night where they stop breathing entirely, should see your GP medical doctor for a sleep study. The doctor may recommend a CPAP machine (continuous positive air pressure) or a simpler and more cost effective dental appliance.

If you are concerned about snoring and want to find out more about snoring appliances, consult your dentist.
